    ingredients to make simple guacamole.

Ripe Hass avocados work very well for this 4 ingredient guacamole recipe. You can find a ripe avocado by selecting one with darker, purple skin that yields gentle pressure.

Lime juice provides acidity that gives great flavor and prevents browning.

Grated garlic also provides great flavor along with sea salt.

    How to Make This Recipe

Below are step-by-step instructions for how to cook this recipe. The recipe card at the bottom shows the exact cooking time and temperatures.

step by step instructions for making simple guacamole.
    1. Remove the skin and pit from the avocados and place them into a bowl. Place avocado flesh into a bowl and use a fork to mash to your desired chunky or creamy texture.
    2. Add lime juice.
    3. Season with salt.
    4. Stir in the grated garlic. Taste and then adjust seasonings according to your liking.

Storage, Make-Ahead Instructions, and Serving Tips

    • Storage: Store guacamole in a dish with a piece of plastic wrap or beeswax wrap pressed into the dip. The Kitchn has a great resource for how to keep guacamole green.
    • Make-Ahead: Guacamole can be made 1-2 days in advance, however, the longer it sits, the greater chance of it turning brown.
    • How to Freeze Guacamole: Freeze 4 ingredient guacamole in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months.
    • Serving: Use it as a snack dip for veggies or tortilla chips or top your Mexican dinners like tacos, quesadillas, or burrito bowls.

    Expert Tips

    • May add jalapeños or onions to make it spicy.
    • Add in a can of Rotel or salsa to make it guacamole salsa.
    • Omit garlic for low FODMAP.
    • Remove all chunks by combining ingredients in a food processor.
    • Make this 4 ingredient guacamole recipe with one avocado by dividing the ingredients by 4.
    • The best way to make this basic guacamole suit your taste is to season and taste. Feel free to add more salt or lime juice as your taste prefers.
    • If your avocados are ripe enough you should be able to peel them and remove the pit with your hands. If you need to cut the avocado to remove the pit, Real Simple has a great resource on how to cut an avocado.

    Recipe FAQs

What is traditional guacamole made of?

Traditionally, guacamole includes ripe avocados, cilantro, onions, jalapeno peppers, garlic, lime juice, and salt.

Can you substitute lemon juice for lime juice in guacamole?

Although lime is more traditional, you can use lemon juice instead of lime juice to prevent the guacamole from turning brown and to give it an acidic balance in flavor.

How do you keep guacamole from turning brown?

Always include lime juice (or lemon juice as a substitute). Try to eat it the day you make it if possible.

    Does guacamole contain onion?

This 4 ingredient guacamole recipe has no onion.

What can I use instead of red onion and cilantro in guac?

To make simple and smooth guacamole, simply omit any kind of onion and cilantro. You will still have great flavor by using this recipe that has grated garlic, salt, and lime juice.

    Can guacamole just be avocado?

Guacamole is a dip with a few ingredients while avocado is a fruit. Mashed avocado is the name of a dip using just avocado.

Although simple, the salt, lime juice and garlic make guacamole taste better and you won't miss the other ingredients.
