⭐ Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • Healthy twist on a kid-friendly favorite! This healthy french toast is a great recipe for getting more whole grains into your breakfast.

    • Customizable. You can air fry it, make it into a casserole or on the stove top. Lots of topping ideas other than maple syrup - see the list below!

    🥘 Ingredients & Substitutions

Here are the ingredients you need to make this recipe. Reference the recipe card at the bottom for exact measurements and the notes below for substitution ideas.

    ingredients for this recipe
    • Dave's Killer Bread - Look for the bread that has the thick slices, not the thin sliced version. There is also the "raisin the roof" version that can be used to make cinnamon raisin french toast. Stores like Aldi carry their own brand of bread similar to Dave's that may also be substituted. To make gluten free, use gluten free bread such as Schar Gluten Free or BFree.
    • Almond Milk - Oat milk or any other plant based milk works. You can also make this recipe using 2% milk if you prefer.
    • Eggs: to make vegan replace eggs with three flax eggs.
    • Coconut sugar: cane or brown sugar may also be used. You could also use monk fruit sweetener to make it with no sugar.
    • Cinnamon: substitute pumpkin spice for cinnamon or omit if preferred.

Below are step-by-step instructions for how to cook this recipe. The recipe card at the bottom shows the exact cooking time and temperatures.

    Stove Top Instructions

    steps for making this recipe
    1. Heat a griddle or a skillet over medium heat. Coat with either coconut oil or butter.
    2. While griddle heats, add eggs, one half of the coconut sugar and the almond milk to a large bowl and whisk them together. Sprinkle with cinnamon.
    3. Dip bread into egg mixture, coating both sides but not completely soaking the bread. Place bread onto heated griddle and allow each side to cook for about 1-2 minutes.
    4. Remove to a plate and add toppings.

    Air Fryer Instructions

Make air fryer french toast with healthy whole grain bread. Follow these easy instructions to get delicious crisp outsides and a warm and delicious inside.

    2. Place prepared bread slices onto air fryer basket and air fry at 380F for 4-5 minutes per side.

    💭 Expert Tips

    • Topping Ideas: Toppings other than syrup like strawberries, raspberries, blueberries or other fresh fruit are a great way to add in even more nutrition to your breakfast. Of course you can with maple syrup or try a drizzle of Nutella, peanut butter or nut butter or even mini chocolate chips.
    • To add more protein, add in 1 scoop of collagen peptides or your favorite protein powder.
    • Storage: Leftovers may be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
    • Reheating: Reheat leftovers in the microwave or the air fryer. Microwave for 30 seconds per side or air fry at 350F for 3-5 minutes or until heated through.
    • Freezer: Prepare recipe as written then allow pieces to cool completely. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet in a single row and allow pieces to freezer before transferring to a freezer-safe container. Use within 3 months.
    • Make Ahead: Dave's Killer Bread french toast may be made ahead into a casserole and refrigerated overnight - see oven instructions for how to make casserole.

    Recipe FAQs

Can you use Dave's Killer Bread in french toast?

Yes! Make sure you are selecting the thick slice version, not the thin sliced. This will help to keep the structure.

What is the trick to french toast?

The trick is to get the bread coated but not soaked. If the bread is too soaked then it will have a harder time getting a crispy outside. Generally 1 minute of soaking per side will work, but keep and eye on it and adjust if necessary.

Also, make sure your griddle is hot enough, but not too hot to get a crispy outside crust.

Apologies Lori, I missed adding that to the recipe card. I will update it now. You sprinkle it over top of the bread before cooking it.
